The Baby, 25 Weeks

There doesn't seem to be a lot of change to talk about this week, but here's what's going on... :)...
Head to heels, your baby now measures about 13 1/2 inches. His weight — a pound and a half — doesn't sound like much, but he's beginning to exchange his long, lean look for a more rounded one. As your baby gains weight, his wrinkled skin will begin to smooth out and he'll start to look more and more like a newborn. His hair is probably recognizable now in color and texture, although both may change after he's born. Babies born with red hair can turn into blonds, dark-haired newborns can grow up with fair tresses, and blonds often turn into brunettes. I think we have a really good chance of a blonde...maybe even a red-head! :)

The Baby, 24 Weeks

So, the last few weeks have been really busy around here, and I completely missed blogging week 23. I'm sorry.
So, here is what happened last week (#23):
Feeling pretty good? Turn on the radio and sway to the music. With her sense of movement well developed now, your baby can feel you dance. Those dainty fetal movements have progressed to karate kicks. You may even be able to see your baby squirm underneath your clothing. (not yet!) You may notice throughout your pregnancy that some symptoms subside while others surface. These days, for example, you may find that any tension headaches you'd been getting are a thing of the past, but your feet may start to swell soon. (Time to get out your roomiest, most comfy shoes or invest in a new pair.) Your baby is more than 11 inches long and weighs just over a pound. His skin is red and wrinkled. Blood vessels in his lungs are developing to prepare him for breathing. He can swallow, but he normally won't pass his first stool (called meconium) until after birth. Loud noises heard often in utero such as your dog barking or the roar of a vacuum cleaner probably won't faze your baby when he hears them outside the womb.
And now, Week #24:
Your baby's growing steadily, gaining about a quarter of a pound since last week, when she was just over a pound. Since she's almost a foot long, that makes a pretty lean figure, but her body is filling out proportionally and she'll soon put on more baby fat. Your baby's skin is thin, translucent, and wrinkled, her brain is growing rapidly, and her taste buds are developing. Her lungs are developing "branches" of the respiratory "tree" and cells that produce surfactant, a substance that helps the air sacs inflate easily.
Well, we went to the doctor again today. The baby's heartbeat was still a strong 150 beats per minute, they found it really fast this time! :) Everything was normal, but I am still not gaining weight. The one time in my life I am not actually trying to lose but gain, and I am losing! Is this fair? I lost 5 pounds since the last visit...time to start eating like a preggo! I feel like I am eating plenty, but I guess not. The doctor didn't seem overly concerned, but said that if it becomes a pattern, we may need to do another ultrasound to ensure that the baby is getting big enough. But, on the other hand, when she measured me, I was right on track for my due date, so there seems to be little to be concerned about.
We scheduled our 3-D ultrasound today. That is going to be awesome! We are going to get to see our precious little one in great detail on November 20th. That will be exciting!! If you have never seen a 3D ultrasound photo, you should check out this website: http://pregnancy.about.com/cs/ultrasounds/l/bl3dusindex.htm and click on some of the photos, they are amazing!

The Baby, 22 Weeks

Your baby now looks like a miniature newborn, checking in at 10.9 inches and almost 1 pound. Her skin will continue to appear wrinkled until she gains enough weight to fill it out, and the fine hair (lanugo) that covers her head and body is now visible. Her lips are becoming more distinct, and the first signs of teeth are appearing as buds beneath her gum line. Her eyes are developed, though the iris (the colored part of the eye) still lacks pigment. Eyelids and eyebrows are in place, and her pancreas, essential for hormone production, is developing steadily. Your stomach may become a hand magnet- people will touch it without asking permission. That is happening recently. :) It's okay to say no. And if people are telling you that you look smaller or bigger than you should at this point, remember that all women grow and show at different rates. I am starting to show a lot more all of a sudden! I have never been "thin" by definition, but I did have a clearly defined waistline. That is now gone! My maternity clothes are fitting better now, and there is now no hope of getting into pre-maternity pants! :) My sweet mother in law gave me a giftcard to Motherhood Maternity for my birthday...I guess it is time to shopping!!! :) My tummy is more noticeable now, someone in Sunday school today said "Wow! Your little bubble grew a lot this week!" :) I am having fun being pregnant, especially now, I can feel this little miracle moving inside of me 4 to 5 times a day, every day! I think this is one of the greatest blessings of being a woman!

Ultrasound Photos! :)

Here are the ultrasound photos as promised! :) If you are like me, you may not be able to read a thing on still pictures of an ultrasound, so let me see if I can explain things a little. The first is of the bottom of the little feet...let me tell you, we have a dancer!! You can even see him/her extending the big toe on the foot on the left (the baby's right foot). The next is of the forearm and fist laying sideways, covering the little face. This one is probably my favorite. :) And lastly, is a good picture of our precious little face. At 20 weeks the baby doesn't have much fat on it, so it still kind of looks like a skeleton. But you can clearly see the eye (sockets), nose, and mouth. Notice you can even see almost all of the little teeth! It was more fun in person, I am hoping to videotape the next one! :) I'm sure this is the cutest baby you have EVER seen, right?! (By the way, I am sorry they came out so little...I have no idea why that happened! Especially for family...you may want to save to your pictures file and look at them larger that way.)
